In the last couple years the interest in the sport of bodybuilding has boomed. Instagram and Tikok are over saturated with fitness influencers from the bodybuilding world. In their videos and comment sections it's common to find them talking about being on a “bulk” or a “cut”.

So what is it?

A Cut is a phrase  commonly used by both bodybuilders and powerlifters. It is a period of time were an individual is losing weight to become as lean as possible to show muscle definition (bodybuilding) or qualify for a weight class for a competition (powerlifting).

Is it safe for me?

Losing weight is not an unhealthy thing to do for most people. However, if someone already has a low or ideal BMI it is not recommended for them to lose weight. Weight loss can be done in both healthy and unhealthy ways. It is recommended that a person does not lose more than 1% of their total body weight each week or around 1 to 2lbs per week. Individuals that lose weight very rapidly often see a drastic decline in their metabolism and over time they eventually gain that weight back. For that reason it is recommended to  lose weight slowly by making lifestyle changes. Weight cycling (repeatedly gaining weight and losing weight) can have a negative impact on an individual's metabolism. Over time this could make gaining weight very easy, but losing weight very difficult. The weight cycling that most bodybuilders do is not necessary for the average gym goer. Gaining weight does help with strength, as muscle growth is seen during this time. With that being said if you are interested in trying a Cut make sure to speak with your doctor and a dietitian to make sure it is safe. A dietitian can help guide you to make sure you are still meeting your nutritional needs. Oftentimes competitors or individuals on a cut restrict certain food groups to lose weight. This can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Working with a dietitian during this time can help you make sure you are fueling your body while still achieving your goals.
